WASHINGTON – Amerika Serikat resmi menyebut operasi militer Myanmar terhadap warga Rohingya sebagai “pembersihan etnis” dan untuk itu AS mengancam untuk menerapkan sanksi kepada mereka yang bertanggung jawab atas apa yang disebutnya “kejahatan yang mengerikan”.

“Situasi di negara bagian Rakhine utara merupakan pembersihan etnis terhadap Rohingya,” kata Menteri Luar Negeri Amerika Serikat Rex
Tillerson.

“Amerika Serikat juga akan meminta pertanggungjawaban dengan menggunakan hukum AS, termasuk kemungkinan sanksi kepada mereka yang bertanggung jawab atas dugaan penyiksaan yang telah memaksa ratusan ribu Rohingya mengungsi ke Bangladesh,” kata Tillerson lagi seperti dikutip Reuters.

AS mengubah pendiriannya sebagai bagian dari upaya meningkatkan tekanan kepada pemimpin militer dan sipil Myanmar yang dalam dua tahun terakhir ini berbagi kekuasaan, setelah berpuluh tahun diperintah junta militer. Tindakan AS ini ditempuh demi menjawab kritik internasional menyangkut krisis Rohingya.

Organisasi-organisasi HAM menuduh militer Myanmar melakukan pembunuhan, pemerkosaan massal dan pembakaran, terhadap warga Rohingya setelah pemberontak Rohingya melancarkan serangan terkoordinasi ke 30 pos polisi dan sebuah pangkalan militer pada 25 Agustus.

Sudah sekitar 600.000 pengungsi Rohingya menyingkir dari Rakhine ke Bangladesh, sejak operasi militer Myanmar setelah serangan pemberontak Rohingya itu.

“Penyiksaan oleh mereka yang berasal dari militer, pasukan keamanan dan warga biasa Burma ini telah menyebabkan penderitaan mengerikan dan memaksa ratusan ribu pria, wanita dan anak-anak meninggalkan rumah mereka,” kata Tillerson.

Mengulangi kecaman AS terhadap serangan pemberontak, Tillerson mengatakan provokasi apa pun, termasuk serangan pemberontak, tidak bisa menjadi justifikasi untuk melakukan kejahatan mengerikan seperti dialami Rohingya.

Pemerintahan Myanmar pimpinan peraih Hadiah Nobel Perdamaian Aung San Suu Kyi, mendapatkan tekanan internasional yang hebat akibat responnya terhadap krisis Rohingya, kendati diakui tak bisa mengendalikan militer yang menjadi mitra berbagi kekuasaan.
