Media online atau media yang berbasis internet perlu dimaksimalkan tata kelola dan pengembangannya, mengingat kecenderungan warga masyarakat dalam semua tingkatan — lokal, regional, nasional maupun internasional — semakin gandrung menggunakan media sosial sebagai sarana untuk mendapat informasi, komunikasi bahkan dianggap paling efektif untuk melakulan publikasi, baik untuk keperluan perorangan, lembaga atau instansi dari sebuah organisasi guna menjangkau orang banyak.

Ucapan selamat, belasungkawa, undangan rapat, pertemuan bisnis dan sejenisnya mulai menjadi trend bagi banyak orang untuk melakukannya lewat facebooks, whatsapp dan sejenisnya yang dirasakan sangat efektif dan efisien. Bahkan tidak sedikit penerbitan buku sudah dianggap cukup ditampilkan dengan media berbasis internet sehingga tidak lagi perlu dicetak membaca naskah buku tersebut, dan cukup mengunduh naskah itu secara eletronik pula.

Pada peringatan Hari Pers Nasional di Medan, Sumatra Utara tahun 2023, dukungan pihak Polri melakukan perlindungan kemerdekaan pers Indonesia kenbali digaungkan, meski ancaman terhadap insan pers masih terus terjadi — atau bahkan cenderung meningkat. Untuk mengatasi ragam ancaman serta intimidasi bahkan tindak kekerasan dari pihak lain, terkesan masih harus dihadapi sendiri oleh insan pers yang bersangkutan.

Karena itu dalam berbagai kesempatan, tak hanya pada hari pers Nasional tahun 2023, gaung terhadap upaya penerintah memberi jaminan perlindungan, dukungan, pembinaan atau bahkan bantuan dalam berbagai bentuk, termasuk subsidi keuangan misalnya untuk melakukan pelatihan maupun pendidikan guna meningkatkan kualitas profesi insan pers online — sebagai pekerja maupun sebagai pengelola media online — belum pernah terbersit, apalagi hendak diwujudkan.

Bantuan atau semacam ikatan kemitraan usaha bersama sejumlah instansi penerintah serta pihak swasta, sesungguhnya bisa dilakukan. Misalnya dengan menyisihkan sebagian dana dari CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) yang dapat juga dipahami sebagai program dari rasa tanggung jawab sosial pihak perusahaan yang bisa dilakulan juga untuk media sosial berbasis internet sehingga dapat dijadikan mitra untuk maju secara bersama dengan cara saling menberi dukungan untuk maju dan untuk membangun budaya yang lebih baik dan harmoni.

Kadivhumas Polri Irjen Pol. Dedi Prasetyo mewakili Kapolri dihadapan sejumlah Dewan Pers, Medan Sumatra Utara (7 Februari 2023) membacakan amanat Kapolri bahwa peran pers sebagai pilar keempat mempunyai peran yang sangat signifikan dalam pembangunan nasional. Karena melalui pers, informasi terkait dapat terdistribusi dengan mudah, cepat.

Media digital pun saat ini diakuinya sungguh diminati masyarakat sebagai sarana untuk mengekspresikan diri, pendapat dan aktivitas, sehingga perlu mendapat perhatian yang tidak kalah penting dari media meastrim yang justru semakin tidak diminati warga masyarakat. Meski begitu, toh media sosial tidak menjadi perhatian penting dari insan pers pada momentum hari pers nasional.

Agaknya, sikap abai insan pers dalam peringatan hari pers nasional di Sumatra Utara itu, masih cukup didominasi oleh insan pers meastrim yang sebetulnya makin kehilangan gairah untuk menatap perkembangan dunia informasi, publikasi dan komunikasi sebagai kontrol sosial yang tidak bisa diabaikan peranannya. Oleh sebab itu, peran insan pers yang aktif dan menekuni media sosial berbasis internet belum mampu dilihat serta dipahami sebagai media massa alternatif yang memiliki potensi serta peran yang mampu menggeser media mainstrem yang masih terkesan pongah dengan bentuk serta tampilannya yang semakin cenderung ditinggalkan warga masyarakat.

Padahal, peran media sosial dalam publikasi, informasi bahkan komunikasi perlu mendapat perhatian ekstra, setidaknya dalam konsekuensi logis untuk mematuhi UU Pers No. 40 Tahun 2019 — utamanya UIT — justru lebih patut mendapat perhatian dari segenap komponen masyarakat, termasuk pemerintah. Dan sebagai lapangan kerja baru, media online atau media yang berbasis internet bisa juga dikembangkan, alih-alih membuka lapangan pekerjaan baru untuk mengatasi masalah dan jumlah pengangguran yang membludak.

Karena itu kebijakan pemerintah untuk mendorong sejumlah instansi yang ada di pemerinrah pusat hingga pemerintah daerah pada semua tingkat, bisa didorong bersama pihak swasta untuk ikut andil membangun media online yang sehat sebagai bagian upaya membuja lapangan kerja baru guna ikut mengatasi masalah pengangguran di Indonesia yang tak kunjung mampu diatasi. Kecuali itu, potensi media online yang tumbuh dengan sangat pesat, bisa menjadi masalah yang merusak, bila tak mendapatkan penyaluran yang tepat pemanfaatannya.
