KESBANG.COM, LONDON – Pemerintah Indonesia memberikan penghargaan kepada tiga orang yang mempelopori kegiatan kesenian gamelan di Inggris pada acara puncak International Gamelan Festival (IGF) 2017 di Cadogan Hall London, Minggu malam waktu setempat.

Direktur Jenderal Kebudayaan pada Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Hilmar Farid dan Duta Besar RI di London Rizal Sukma menyerahkan penghargaan pemerintah Indonesia kepada Alec Roth, Neill Sorrell, dan Anne Hunt.

Kepada Antara, Anne Hunt mengaku terharu dan tidak menyangka usahanya mempopulerkan musik gamelan di Inggris mendapat penghargaan.

“Suatu kehormatan dan kebanggaan bagi saya pribadi mendapat penghargaan atas apa yang pernah saya lakukan,” kata Anne Hunt, yang berharap bisa kembali ke Indonesia.

Dia pernah membawa tur musisi dan penari Jawa keliling Inggris dan Eropa dengan perangkat gamelan berada belakang mobil van.

Sementara Neill Sorrell, etnomusikolog yang pernah belajar gamelan di Universitas Wesleyan, mengibaratkan upaya mereka sebagai bibit bunga yang kini sudah tumbuh dan bertambah banyak.

Pengajar musik di York University itu mendorong universitas membeli gamelan, yang baru terwujud setelah upaya delapan tahun, serta terlibat dalam berbagai kegiatan kesenian gamelan di Inggris seperti Durham Oriental Music Festival & English Gamelan Orchestra.

Direktur Jenderal Kebudayaan Hilmar Farid mengatakan penghargaan kepada ketiga pelopor seni gamelan itu merupakan bentuk apresiasi pemerintah kepara orang-orang yang mendukung pengembangan musik gamelan di Inggris.

Gamelan sudah mendunia sejak 1889, ketika Paris World Fair menampilkannya. Sekarang gamelan sudah tersebar dan tumbuh di banyak lembaga pendidikan dan seni, dan menjadi salah satu alat ekspresi seniman dunia.

Komunitas-komunitas gamelan sekarang sudah tersebar di Prancis, Inggris, Belanda, Jerman dan negara Eropa lain; serta Amerika dan Asia. Di Amerika tercatat ada setidaknya 200-an komunitas gamelan sedang di Inggris ada 158 komunitas.

Kepala Subdit Diplomasi Budaya Luar Negeri Ahmad Mahendra mengatakan di Inggris, gamelan sudah terdokumentasi oleh Stamford Raffles (1781-1826) yang memberikan deskripsi gamelan paling awal dalam The History of Java (1817).

Raffles adalah orang Inggris pertama yang membawa dua ansambel gamelan ke negaranya. Satu di antaranya bisa ditemukan di Claydon House di London. British Museum juga menyimpan koleksi gamelan sejak tahun 1859. (Ant)
